The First 5 Years Impact a Lifetime

As a parent, family member or influential adult in the life of a child under age five, you are shaping the future of the world - for better or for worse. 90% of the human brain is formed by the age of five, and many things impact that development along the way. The most important influence? Relationships!

Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs)

PCEs are associated with 72% lower odds of having depression or poor mental health overall as an adult.

Kindergarten Entry Developmental Profile

KEPD

The first five years of a child's life are extremely important for healthy development, so First 5 Lake and the Lake County Office of Education partnered together to create the KEDP. The KEDP is a rubric based survey that caregivers and teachers complete about where their Kindergartener is developmentally to assess how well Pre-K, T-K, and parents prepared the child for Kindergarten as a way to determine school readiness.

Fathers & Father Figures

Research shows that fathers not only have the capacity for caregiving, but that children benefit directly from dads' parenting contributions. Findings consistently show the positive, lifelong impact fathers can have by being positively engaged early in their children's lives. People with actively involved father figures during childhood are more likely to have higher levels of success in their careers, a better chance of having a strong and lasting marriage, and an improved ability to handle stress.
